Hmong backless peplum top

September 24, 2013

My original idea, before I got home from work, was to make two dresses before I head to bed. I started on the backless dress and decided to make a peplum top instead.  I figured I have more dresses in mind than I have tops so better make tops before this collection comprise of mainly dresses. Besides, I’ve attempted twice to make a peplum top and both failed. The third attempt has to be a charm right? And, it did turn out cute; reminds me of a ballerina dress.

I’ve been meaning to remake the infinity dress, which is supposed to be made yesterday night. I got tired and went to bed instead. This morning, I took a few minutes to drape around the dressform to see how it would look like and I must say, I don’t know; or my draping is just really bad.

I worked on the embroidery top and realized I did not like the high neckline with the style I was aiming for. I haven’t trash it yet, but it’s set aside for now. I don’t know if I will reattempt it soon.

The night before last, I worked on a dress and knew exactly what I wanted to do with the top, but the fabric just wouldn’t want to work with me. I played around with it and felt I needed to just sleep on it. Then voila! The first piece done last night.

Initiated!

September 18, 2013

Yesterday night, I started on the “new collection”. I have in mind a peplum top with embroidery and the Hmong printed scarf. I know I know, it may have too much materials in one article, but I think it’ll be fine. Besides, I want this collection to be more Hmong; the first one was too modern or American. I guess the hard part is getting the execution exactly as I have in my mind so that it doesn’t look tacky. Hmong items are colorful and when I like an item, it is mainly because I like the color combinations. Weird thing is, I can’t seem to get red and green together on a dress without it looking Christmassy. Anyway, below is a photo of what I could get done yesterday night. My embroidery machine is BROKEN, so I am very limited to using embroidery :(

These are just photos of the Hmong scarves I will be using. BTW, they are also on sale on my etsy shop! Grab one before I use it all up.

Black and Gold Dress

April 29, 2012

Seems like it’s been a long time since I posted something I made so I decided to make a dress and post it up. I spent the day fabric shopping, found a bunch of fabrics I like, but nothing I had to have so I just used whatever fabric I had on hand. I like sewing basic silhouette dresses because it’s versatile. The type of fabric or accessories can turn it into an everyday dress or a formal dress. This silhouette is very basic but because it’s made out of brocade, it’s great for a special occasion. If it was made out of cotton or polyester, it’ll be more of a spring/summer dress.

I don’t think I’ll be posting this dress on my etsy shop anytime soon. I need to get more of this fabric. I also want to make this dress more Hmong; maybe use a solid color for the dress and add embroidery on the neckline and hem.
